When Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service set out to upgrade the fitness facilities across their stations, they needed a partner who could deliver consistently at scale, tailored to every space and every team. Origin assessed each site individually, developed equipment solutions for each one, and managed the full installation across the entire estate.

The challenge:

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is one of the largest fire and rescue services in the UK, with stations spread across a wide and varied geographic area. Their firefighters depend on physical fitness not just for their own wellbeing, but for their ability to carry out their role safely and effectively every single day. Maintaining that fitness across a busy operational schedule requires access to quality equipment, consistently available and properly maintained at every station.

GMFRS approached Origin with a clear objective: to upgrade the gym facilities across their stations to a standard that would genuinely support their firefighters' physical preparation. The challenge wasn't just the scale of the project - equipping stations across the whole of Greater Manchester - but the variation within it. Every station has a different footprint, a different existing setup, and a different set of constraints. A solution that worked at one station wouldn't necessarily work at another, and a one-size-fits-all approach was never going to be adequate.

What GMFRS needed was a partner who could assess each site individually, develop a tailored solution for each space, and deliver the whole programme to a consistent standard without putting the burden of project management onto their own team.

The solution:

Origin began the project with a thorough site assessment across the stations, visiting each location to understand the available space, the existing provision, and what each station's firefighters would need from an upgraded facility. That groundwork was essential -without it, the equipment selection and layout decisions couldn't be made with any confidence.

Collaborative consultations with the GMFRS team informed the equipment brief for each site. Fitness for firefighters has specific demands: strength and functional conditioning to support the physical nature of the job, cardiovascular fitness to meet the requirements of operational readiness testing, and enough variety to keep a rotating shift of personnel engaged and active. Equipment was selected across each of those areas, with every recommendation made in the context of the station it was going into.

Three stations illustrate the range and approach well.

At Agecroft Fire Station, the focus was on versatile functional training equipment that could serve a wide range of training styles and fitness levels within the available space, with integrated storage keeping the floor clear and accessible.

At Broughton Fire Station, the emphasis was on strength and conditioning, with flooring installed to create a safe, durable lifting environment suitable for the kind of compound and Olympic-style work that supports operational fitness.

At Stalybridge Fire Station, cardiovascular fitness was the priority, with equipment specified to support the kind of structured fitness testing that GMFRS uses to monitor and maintain firefighter readiness - including the Chester Step Test built into the cardio provision.

Across all stations, equipment was specified to perform reliably under the demands of regular, shift-based use. Installation was managed by Origin's team of certified technicians, who ensured every piece was set up safely and to the required standard. Station staff also received comprehensive guidance on equipment use, maintenance, and safety protocols, so that each team could get the most from their new facilities from day one.

The outcome:

The upgraded facilities have given GMFRS firefighters across Greater Manchester access to equipment that genuinely matches the physical demands of their role. Strength, cardiovascular fitness, and functional conditioning are all supported, and the consistency of the provision across stations means that firefighters moving between locations are training in environments they recognise and can rely on.

The impact has been felt both physically and culturally. Improved gym facilities have contributed to a more positive working environment, with the shared experience of training together reinforcing the camaraderie and team spirit that is central to how fire stations operate. As Sam Brown, GMFRS Fitness Adviser, put it - keeping firefighters fit isn't just good for them personally, it's crucial to their ability to do their job.

Origin managed this project from initial assessment through to completed installation across the estate, coordinating logistics, adapting to the specific requirements of each site, and ensuring the programme was delivered without placing an unnecessary burden on the GMFRS team. It is a strong example of what Origin can deliver at scale, and of the kind of partnership that goes well beyond a straightforward equipment order.

Testimonial

Sam Brown, Fitness Adviser for GMFRS

“Overall 40 stations have been fitted out with brand new Origin equipment ..and we are really impressed, and I know the fire fighters are too. It’s so important for their role, it’s crucial for their day-to-day life that they spend time in the gym, working on that functionality by training doing loads of different exercises with the equipment available, so they can go carry out their job and their role with ease.”

Implementation process:

Site assessment:

Origin Fitness conducted a thorough evaluation of each fire station so that each space could receive a tailored fitness solution adapted to their unique space.

Equipment selection:

Collaborative consultations with GMFRS ensured that the selected equipment met the diverse fitness needs of the firefighters. As an example the treadmills selected were equipped with a built-in Chester Fire Fitness Test, this is vital for the firefighters to asses fitness levels.

Strength training equipment:

For strength training, we provided a set of Origin Rubber Crumb Bumper Plates, Men’s Competition Bar and a Origin Elite Series Half Rack. For more precision training, we added the Alpha Dual Adjustable Pulley with a wide range of different attachments.

Installation:

A team of certified technicians meticulously installed the equipment, taking care to adhere to safety standards and ensure equipment will optimally function long after the installation.

Training:

Comprehensive training sessions were provided to station staff, covering equipment usage, maintenance, and safety protocols.

Benefits:

Firefighters now have access to a variety of specialised equipment, promoting overall fitness, and addressing specific training requirements. The improved gym facilities have contributed to a positive work environment, fostering camaraderie and team spirit. Firefighters are better prepared physically for the demands of their duties, enhancing their overall operational efficiency.
