If you weren't aware National Fitness Day 2024 is happening tomorrow on Wednesday, September 18th. Started in 2011, the day was created to encourage and inspire people nationwide to be active and celebrate the vital role of physical activity in our health throughout the UK.
In 2024, we have a more comprehensive understanding of fitness. Exercise reduces the most common physical illnesses like heart disease, strokes, and cancer, all major health issues in the UK. Moreover, movement not only improves our physical health but also plays a significant role in our mental well-being, which was reported as a leading cause of ill health in the UK earlier this year.
This year's theme, "Your Health is your Life," continues from 2023. It encourages not just being active on a single day of the year, but taking small steps toward a lifestyle that safeguards and enhances health. The focus is on incorporating movement into your daily routine and discovering activities that work for you whether it's running, cycling, weightlifting, or something different.
How to Get Involved?
One of our recent site installations, Life Leisure Cheadle is supporting National Fitness Day this year by offering members a wide range of activity sessions to get involved in. From swimming lessons to low-impact social sessions, they have something for all ages to support everyone's fitness journey.
Activities start with the under 5s with sessions focussed on the little ones but progress onto adult classes and even some senior activity options. These simple activities are about exploring how everyone can get fitter and move more this year, but Life Leisure isn't the only one involved in National Fitness Day this year.
With the main focus this year on “Your Health is your Life” the goal is to just start moving. If you feel stuck on the best place to start the team at Total Fitness has a great hub of ideas to get you moving. The hub offers a range of easy activities to get you started including recovery workouts, low-impact exercises, and circuit training.
In previous years they've even run challenges which are a great starting point if you're unsure where to begin. With movement being the main focus this year, the hub also has a range of advice covering everything from fitness guides, wellness & nutrition, to Women's Health. Across the nation, many large chains are also getting involved this year.
Most large gym chains will also be getting involved this year including The Gym Group, David Lloyds, and Nuffield Health. Look out for a range of offers including discounted memberships and fitness challenges on the day. To find the nearest partner facility, use the location finder to see the closest place to get involved next week.
