Royal Mail Gym Case Study
WHO: Royal Mail
WHERE: Edinburgh
TYPE: Corporate Gym
THE CHALLENGE:
Edinburgh's Royal Mail Distribution Centre processes mail from across the UK at this central hub. The Distribution Centre runs continually around the clock meaning staff work all kinds of shift patterns.
To support its staff, Royal Mail focuses on doing everything it can to support their well-being, one of which is providing an in-house gym facility so staff can stay fit no matter their working pattern.
When we got involved in this project, the brief was simple. Upgraded equipment was needed to modernise the space on a budget, and the team had a clear vision of what the space was missing.

THE SOLUTION:
To realise this vision, our account manager, Archie, got to work putting together initial quotes with the requested equipment. Working closely with Craig Trench (Site Contact), we helped select equipment from our strength, free weights, cardio, and gym flooring ranges.
We also sent two of our product team to help with the build process and equipment installation. The boys had spent time working on several of the designs for this space, which they got to see firsthand in person. They helped install much of the equipment, getting stuck in with drilling rigs, laying gym flooring, and pulling together the finished equipment.

Many employees use the gym before and after their shifts, so it's a space that gets a lot of use. Having an on-site gym allows staff to work out at the time that suits them best, allowing them to work out around their shifts easily. Staff can start at 5 a.m. or 11 p.m. depending on shift patterns, so having easy gym access throughout the day is a real benefit.

EQUIPMENT SELECTION:
Archie had to get creative with his selected equipment to stay within the budget. The space was kitted out with Performance Series Half Racks with additional attachments to expand the racks' capabilities.
Certain Impulse Fitness strength machines, such as the Sterling Leg Press, Glute Ham Bench, and IF93 Dual Leg Extension/Leg Curl Machine, were also included.

To enhance the equipment on offer, a range of free weights, including our new Olympic Barbells, Crumb Rubber Bumper Plates, and Rubber Olympic Weight Plates, was also chosen.

Gym Flooring also needed to be replaced, so we selected 20mm Premium Tiles, which can absorb impact, reduce force, and provide a stable and hard-wearing top sheet.
This design gives them high noise and vibration absorption levels and a long-lasting top sheet that is easy to clean and well-suited to the Royal Mail site.

THE OUTCOME:
Since adding the new equipment, staff have seen increased facility use with lots of positive feedback. The gym has transformed into an even more supportive environment where staff can thrive and reach their fitness goals. We’re excited to see how this space helps everyone on their journey thrive.

From the very first time we contacted Origin and said we were building a gym, the process was easy. Everybody was friendly and helpful... We've been very impressed by the quality and feel of all the equipment.
