An Olympic barbell forms the equipment base of most gyms. These barbells are similar to standard barbells except they are slightly stronger which allows them to hold more weight and have a sleeve diameter which is two inches thicker than the one inch found on standard bars. The revolving ends on an Olympic barbell known as ‘sleeves’ are also a point of difference as they allow weight plates to spin, which reduces the risk of injury during weightlifting, especially during Olympic lifts. Allowing the sleeves to rotate reduces the level of torque created by the plates and therefore reduces strain. As standard these types of barbells often have fantastic handle knurling to improve grip and comfort during workouts.
The most common type of Olympic barbells are normally 20kg Olympic barbells or 15kg Olympic Barbells, but modern gyms now tend to also keep a range of utility barbells including lighter 10kg alternatives on hand as these make lifting easier for everyone regardless of fitness ability level. 15kg Olympic barbells are normally found in female IWF competitions due to the rules of the sport, although they are not just for women! These bars can be a great choice for anyone who want to try Olympic weightlifting with a smaller starting load. The 10kg Technique Bar is perfect for complete novices as it is designed to allow users to practice their form and correct their technique before progressing onto a the heavier Olympic barbells.
