Objectives

Origin Fitness were pleased to be chosen as one of the partners to work on this exciting project that saw the College install specialist flooring, free weights, platforms and strength training equipment to facilitate the development of the students skills across a number of areas while working towards their qualifications.

Dundee & Angus College

Our focus during the project was in helping Dundee & Angus College meet their specific needs and requirements, since the way the facility is used could be considered quite unique when compared to other commercial environments. It was crucial for us to fully understand their requirements regarding space, safety and functionality.

Origin Fitness was instructed to provide a training facility that would be able to meet the needs of the current curriculum and fitness industry demands whilst further enhancing the student experience in a state of the art facility.

As an industry trainer of Gym Instructors and Personal Trainers through the delivery of Active IQ qualifications the facility was required to help build on the portfolio of courses being delivered to prospective learners

Gym Design and Planning

When working with their Origin Fitness account manager, the staff at Dundee & Angus College made it clear that their specialist Olympic lifting area needed to be flexible and they had to be able to have multiple athletes/students working at the same time within the small space they have available.

Dundee & Angus College

We advised that traditional lifting platforms take up quite a lot of space and suggested embedding the platform within a larger lifting area covered with specialist Duraflex rubber tiles. This meant that moving benches and equipment around a busy space would be far easier because the floor is completely level and that several people could be safely performing high impact exercises/lifts at the same time. The plywood base which was used to align the flooring and platform also offers additional protection to the expensive equipment and concrete floor below.

Equipment Installed

The strength and conditioning suite, which is also used by the local community in Arbroath, boasts a selection of equipment from the fitness industry’s leading brands including Star Trac, Impulse Fitness, Werk-San, Origin Fitness and Duraflex gym flooring. The high Impact gym tiles were a key aspect of the design and installation of the gym and compliment the Origin Fitness, Werk-San and Impulse Fitness strength equipment which was carefully selected to offer students the opportunity to learn and train in a top class facility.

Alongside the gym’s comprehensive strength training offering, the College have also installed an exciting range of cardiovascular equipment, including Spinner NXT Bikes and the technologically unsurpassed eSpinner from the same manufacturer.

Outcome

Although the project’s focus was enhancing the teaching and learning experiences for those involved with Dundee and Angus College’s sport and fitness programmes, the facility has brought health and fitness benefits to students, staff and the wider community.

Combined with an enhancement to learning and teaching it has further helped increase the overall health and wellbeing of the sports students and college staff as they utilise the facility outside curriculum times, which is mainly during lunchtimes or at the end of the college day.

As it is a joint shared facility with Angus Council, the local public have also benefited from the quality of equipment installed.
