We have worked with North Lanarkshire Leisure (NLL) for many years. Throughout this time, we have supported many of their gym refurbishment projects to make sure they can continue offering their customers the best training options. North Lanarkshire Leisure's Health and Fitness Development Manager Nichola McLachlan agreed to offer us some insight to their approach to future proofing their gyms.

Recently, here at North Lanarkshire Leisure we have undergone a huge transformational process. The majority of our facilities have received, or are currently in the middle of, huge refurbishments.

We decided to embark on this large scale project because it is our mission to provide our members with first class facilities that allow them to fulfill all of their workout goals, no matter what they are.  Before we refurbish a facility, it’s vital that we take on-board what our members needs are. We can then use that information to help us shape what our gyms and venues will look like.

For example, we have seen a rise in the number of people who are participating in HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) sessions, therefore we chose to introduce new state of the art HIIT Cardio training machines. Our venues now have Curved Treadmills, Stairmasters, AirFit Turbo Trainers, Versaclimbers and SkiErg machines. This allows for members to have a wide variety of choice when they are working out.

After all, we know our members like to mix up their workout routines and it’s our job to provide them with a range of options. As well as providing variety, these machines allow for customisation meaning that workouts can be tailored to suit individual needs and effectively help members meet their goals.

As well as introducing new HIIT machines to help assist cardio workouts, we also developed functional spaces within our gyms. These functional spaces are used for various activities such as HIIT sessions and body weight training. Not only this, the creation of these functional spaces has meant that we were able to add ‘workout toys’ to our gyms. These toys include battle ropes, slam balls and power sleds. These workout accessories have combined to sculpt a fun, interesting and dynamic area to work out.

Following the critical evaluation of our gyms, we have also decided to introduce dedicated Strength & Conditioning area. These are areas within our gyms that include racks, platforms and plated loaded resistance machines. As well as having these dedicated areas, we’ve also taken the step to increase the number of fixed resistance machines in our gyms. This added variety again makes for a better workout with added options for our members.

Another result of refurbishing our venues is the introduction of Functional Training Rig areas. The implementation of these areas has allowed for a whole new way of bodyweight training to be discovered, like the introduction of monkey bars into our gyms, which has provided training options which previously did not exist within our venues.

The refurbishment process that we have undergone in recent times has been hugely important. It is of course our main focus that we do all we can to keep our members happy, and fulfill their needs when it comes to achieving the perfect workout. We believe that our new gym equipment, workout areas, and modern facilities provide the setting for this to be a reality to all members.

Although we have undergone a huge refurbishment process, it is our mission at NLL to never stop improving. That’s why we always take feedback seriously and look to provide the best facilities we possibly can.
